Aeon

@thereal_truther @joaquinlife I think you're underestimating the social cost of even frequent mild illness. Time lost from work, reduced productivity, canceled activities, quality of life, etc.
Covid is likely now similar to flu in severity for middle age or older, but at this point far more frequent.

@thereal_truther @joaquinlife Yeah I don't know what he wants, but improved building codes, workplace safety regulations, required and/or public-funded sick pay, all seem good to me. I was in favor of all these things before covid, it only adds to their value.

@thereal_truther @joaquinlife Milder is good, it doesn't mean harmless. Many are still vulnerable and everyone will become vulnerable in time (unless dead early for whatever reasons). We also don't know the rate (or certainty) of "milding", so it is prudent to work to layering risk reduction.

@thereal_truther @joaquinlife Ventilation won't "just happen" on it's own. A patchwork of a few places here and there improving ventilation on their own is not effective. There's a significant coordination effort needed. Plus many important facilities (e.g. schools) are literally government.

@thereal_truther @joaquinlife Improving ventilation is very likely a positive for society and can be supported by government. Likewise, continued funding of improved vaccines (vaccines are a public good, they'll be undersupplied and overpriced if left to the private sector) and other reasonable measures.

@thereal_truther @joaquinlife Getting reinfected twice per year or once per year or once every five years makes a very significant difference in any number of ways.
I'm not quibbling on containment, only on "best we can do".

@thereal_truther @joaquinlife Everyone will be exposed at some point but by now that is mostly irrelevant since most people already have. But reinfections are a fact of life too. There is a rate of infections going forward and they carry significant risk especially to those who are or become more vulnerable.

@thereal_truther @joaquinlife Experts have been calling for this, and it's even part of policy at various levels but not a lot of effort/resources is being put into it.

@thereal_truther @joaquinlife Best we can do is probably too strong a claim. There are reasonable measures such as improving ventilation that reduce the intensity of transmission and therefore the number of infections over time (probably not just covid but others too).

@VanGennepD @CT_Bergstrom How does 90-10 differ from 50-50 or 10-90?
In all cases they're both significant threats going forward. In no case will it result in significant accountability.

@Aintropy @WalkerBragman It's only 5 days so I don't think that's really what they meant. She's whitewashing that the guidance says to go back out and infect people at five days even if you're coughing, sore throat, etc., as long as you're coughing a little less.

@Aintropy@WalkerBragman
