Aeon

@Sling35419208 @zorinaq That's not what this means. It means there are 13% more obese people in the "fatter" state. Which is to say even "low obesity" states still have a LOT of obesity compared to low obesity countries.

@Sling35419208 @zorinaq Take the lower bound of age vs. higher bound of obesity if you like. Still age is a MUCH bigger factor.

@Sling35419208 @zorinaq It's a contributor but FAR less than age and at the population level, not so much. 16% difference in obesity at population level means risk difference is only 1/6 of what it is for an obese vs. non-obese individual. i.e. small.

@SergioMoxika @hjelle_brian SOME wear low quality masks SOME of the time and the net result is still SOME reduction in transmission (which, on the back side of a surge means a faster decline). Loosening up in various ways is why declines from surge often slow or stall, nothing about the virus changes.

@Sling35419208 @zorinaq Considering only large countries, US obesity rate is 36%, India 4% (12x or +32%). But for states, the range is only 40% Mississippi down to 24% Colorado (1.6x or +16%).

@Sling35419208 @zorinaq Difference between states may be even smaller than that, because the spread in obesity rates is much narrower.

@simulx @AShihipar Many fold reduction in severe outcomes is the point. There are many unvaccinated dead people in the past month (+thousands/day), moderate number vaccinated, hardly any boosted.

@andyaschmidt @MelpomeneMel @MeKathleen @jklmd123 @denise_dewald It tripled in fraction but cases halved so R=1.5, which is not low at all. That's higher than most previous surges must places (Omicron peaked higher).

@Sling35419208 @zorinaq Obesity rates are significantly overrated in importance. In addition to obesity only being a moderate risk increaser (compared to age), obesity rates only differ only incrementally. Vermont 26%, Alabama 39% = 13% difference. Works out to be a small factor. 1/

@Sling35419208 @zorinaq Also, vaccine uptake certainly matters, but a lot of deaths were pre-vaccines (or during early uptake). /end

@wsbgnl That's a "baseline", assuming no future surges or variants (fat chance!).
It means, even at 200k, years of reduced life expectancy.
https://twitter.com/ASlavitt/s...

That doesn’t account for future waves from new variants. Our highly mutating & shape-shifting SARS-2 is marked more by its fitness characteristics than anything else @K_G_Andersen of @scrippsresearch tells me. (Also a Denmark expert!) 16/

https://twitter.com/ASlavitt/s...

@Drzgoo @danaparish @Bob_Wachter Most transmission happens in the first few days. Low difference, and since there are more vaccinated people, plenty fo the spread is coming from vaccinated, probably majority of it.

@Drzgoo@danaparish@Bob_Wachter
