Aeon

@RadioFreeTom @SethBKrantz @mehdirhasan There were offramps (see White House and CDC opening roadmap in spring/summer 2020). They included gating rules, rollback rules, supporting mitigations (ramp up testing, etc.). Politicians at almost every level said fuck it, just open everything now and pretend it's over.

@RadioFreeTom@SethBKrantz@mehdirhasan

@gregggonsalves @CDCgov CDC made other changes too around that time, including no testing for vaccinated even if exposed, not collecting data on breakthrough cases, eliminating social distancing in most contexts, etc.

@gregggonsalves @CDCgov CDC shifted back to recommending mask wearing but this time with a complicated algorithm that requires checking a web site every day and every time you cross a county line.
Putting them back on was part of the issue but also unnecessarily obtuse confusing guidance.

@i_petersen @fibke Irony = When a chart shows deaths increase by 20x and someone claims this is "misleading" because half of them are with-not-of.

@AGoldsmithEsq @alexmeshkin It's driven by midterms but it's a huge gamble that a big surge or other problematic development won't happen before the midterms, which could backfire spectacularly. I get being behind and going for it though.

@AGoldsmithEsq@Alexmeskin

@NjbBari3 @MarvinH2_G2 @hjelle_brian Extinction is A steady state, but not the only one. Again, nobody knows for sure where it is going and how long it will take.

@NJBari3@MarvinH2_G2@hjelle_brian灭绝是一种稳定状态,但不是唯一的一种。

@NjbBari3 @MarvinH2_G2 @hjelle_brian An attractor is an oscillation in a sense, but not predictably periodic. The range of variation can be wide.
Even if there is an attractor, and even if its properties aren't terrible, I don't think anyone knows how long it would take to get there

@MarvinH2_G2 @NjbBari3 @hjelle_brian The you will crash to a period of quiescence and then have a new wave as the huge number of people infected by the last wave experience waning immunity more or less at the same time.

@MarvinH2_G2 @NjbBari3 @hjelle_brian It's actually way more complicated than that ideal due to external factors and not just properties of the model itself. The intuition behind bifurcations is pretty simple here BTW. With high R, you will have massive overshoot i.e. "too much" immunity to just barely stop the wave.
