@RectumSpectrum But remote work is amazing for the environment (and urban congestion), no?
Basically I think the environment dystopia is very real but we're already on the way to clawing ourselves out of it.
Deforestation too: https://t.co/0KFtLWCcaI

@RectumSpectrum The last decade is the first one in which CO2 emissions stopped increasing.
Also, from personal experience, progress in cleaning up the urban air in China over the last ~8 years has been amazing. https://t.co/rN5aRk3h48

@brianfairchild The problem there is that it's a centralized reputation system where one actor can inject arbitrary political goals into the score. Need a decentralized reputation system with open-source logic, no dependence on specific actors.

BTW this includes a definite-optimist attitude to crypto. Hence my focus on:
* Public goods funding
* Social recovery / multisig wallets
* Reputation systems (could help a lot to fight scams!)
* PoS (solves energy issues)
* Scaling (reduces fees, makes non-financial apps viable)

*PoS(解决能源问题)

I do think that we need less indefinite optimism and more definite optimism - less relying on magic forces to make things better and more concerted efforts to identify specific great things that could be built and build them.

Of course, there are big problems. But to me, the problems do not add up to a generalized "case against technology". They are sector-specific problems with sector-specific solutions.
AI friendliness work. Biodefense. Decentralized tech. Treaties against some really nasty stuff.

Each of those items is a Really. Big Deal.
I even think that if you give people the option of going back to a world where the technology is rewound to what it was in 2000, many would consider *that* a dystopia. I know I would!

Some people responded "but technology HAS had few upsides and many downsides!"
I definitely agree there are important problems. But I also think much of the pessimism is narrative, not reality.

Explanation 4: today's culture is just in general more driven by fear of dystopia rather than excitement about positive visions, and so everyone's first question is now "will your thing create a dystopia?"
(If true, I think this is unhealthy and we should just fight it head-on)

@0xc1c4da I think if @ethstatus makes 1-2 more steps up in quality and UX and gets to the point where I can recommended it as a chat replacement to normies, it could single-handedly start turning things around!

@pengju20 @David_Ehrenfeld @Noahpinion I think AI-assisted film making tools will enable solo film creators, which might radically disrupt this trend.

@LT70000 I generally favor efficiency-enhancing or neutral taxes, which tend to have a side effect of being low-surveillance.
Examples:
* Property tax or ideally land value tax
* Carbon tax
* Congestion tolls
* Harberger taxes on IP
* Some luxury taxes
* Sales tax / VAT

@David_Ehrenfeld @Noahpinion Not radical at all imo. In fact, quite a "the directors think they're being brave but they're actually being totally mainstream" vibe.

@David\u Ehrenfeld@Noahpinion
