Historically it doesn't tend to last long. In both Bitcoin and Monero, miners will often move hash rate off a dominant pool, thus the vulnerability is short-lived. The previous >50% Monero pool is now 38%.
Better that it doesn't happen at all, I agree.

@weskerfoot @RealSexyCyborg Not trivial to use correctly. You can just easily cross contaminate yourself or something else you touch again after you take the gloves off (phone, keys, etc.)
Also, there have been shortages, may be again.

@bascule @KirinDave It's not that simple. There is more than naked trust since pool dominance is fleeting. A pool that produced dishonest blocks would likely lose customers. This is both a self-correcting mechanism as well as an economic motive to not exploit.

@KirinDave @bascule An "attack" at least arguably implies some sort of actual harm, like double spending or destabilizing the chain. In both Monero and Bitcoin and most other cases where a pool has had 50%+ this doesn't happen, the chain just continues normally.

@bascule @KirinDave I've yet to see evidence that exchanges care if you there is a quarter of a penny of suspicious funds mixed in there somewhere. Maybe they do, but it's not clear. As I understand it, they generate a risk score, and small amounts may not score meaningfully.

If the troublemaker is willing to send meaningful amounts then it becomes less obvious, but that's also less likely to happen for obvious reasons.

Monero (of which AEON is a small offshoot) suggests that it solves the problem, but then some exchanges refuse to accept it at all. Still, from a usability perspective if you're able to create a circular economy, this may be better.
