Aeon

@kenlipartito @Immagineimagine @ashishkjha Especially after mid January the difference is stark. At the end of those charts, California positivity = 5%, Florida = 15%.

@kenlipartito @Immagineimagine @ashishkjha The colder parts of FL is about the same as the warmer parts of CA in the winter, and it diverges from there.
It wasn't helpful to equate seasonality. He should have left that out.
Also, cases not as close as he claimed. Florida had worse testing.

@ashishkjha Florida may have also had a lot more cases https://t.co/XUD9GZPVR4

@kenlipartito @Immagineimagine @ashishkjha It's cold enough in much of California that people don't spend anywhere near as much time outside, especially at night. Even Los Angeles which is often compared to Florida has a lot more cool or cold winter weather. Rest of state is colder. https://t.co/FbxziYsMNo

https://t.co/FbxziYsMNo

@Clarabellepip @haibintx @hamptonsliz @Immagineimagine @ashishkjha Also, it looks like Florida did have more cases, but tested less, given the consistency higher positivity rates.

@Clarabellepip@haibintx@hamptonsliz@Immagine@ashishkjha

@Clarabellepip @haibintx @hamptonsliz @Immagineimagine @ashishkjha This MAY be the important factor but there are enough extra seniors in Florida (about 30% more) that population alone also COULD make the difference. It's really hard to tell from the data provided.

@Clarabellepip@Haibindx@hamptonsliz@Immagine@ashishkjha

@JustTheFacts37 @Fozzymandias1 @Immagineimagine @ashishkjha Lower humidity in California too (even in winter, though Florida winter humidity is lower than summer too). That may also make a difference, but science on this is pretty unclear.

@Nutmeg031992 @ColinDotNet @unmaskourfuture @jennnloveslove @choo_ek As you say, most real people are not very invested in what others do. Trying too hard to push agenda or influence others = troll.

@Nutmeg031992 @ColinDotNet @unmaskourfuture @jennnloveslove @choo_ek I'm telling you, most of them are literal trolls, as in Internet Research Agency or the like. Some may be real people caught up in the division, but there is really no way to tell which is which. The trolls always claim to be real people of course.

@unmaskourfuture @jennnloveslove @ColinDotNet @choo_ek People paid people to grocery shop for them before the pandemic too (in fact even decades ago). It's a perfectly legitimate service.
Also, a lot of grocery delivery comes now from a warehouse and skips the store entirely. No one is "shopping". It is a different delivery model.

@kenlipartito @Immagineimagine @ashishkjha That was my point. Even Southern California (particularly the more inland and higher elevation areas) are colder than most of Florida and Northern California is colder still. It's really not the same climate and California is so big that it doesn't even have one climate.

@AbraarKaran It's a stretch to attribute this to boosters specifically from the data given. Florida has about 1/3 more people over 65 so that alone could easily account for the difference in deaths. Also more mask use in California. If dose matters, that could lead to lower severity.

@EssArrBee @Immagineimagine @ashishkjha Southern California vs Florida might be a more fair comparison, in terms of both population AND weather.
Overall his thread wasn't really about that, so I'm not sure why he even mentioned it. Would have been better off not to.

@tameneutral @fitterhappierAJ @jklmd123 You finally found one. Good job. I think we better wait and see what happens elsewhere. South Africa had low deaths from original Omicron, other places, especially the US, did not.

@ashishkjha Percent over 65 is about 1/3 higher in Florida than California. On the surface, this alone could account for most of the difference in death rate. Not saying it did, but you shouldn't dismiss it so quickly.
