@lymanstoneky Considering the number of above-trend elderly and other vulnerable people who died in 2020 and 2021, normal would be below trend and possibly an outright decrease (the same person can't die twice).

@sbmeunier @rolandlisf @MaryKang23 @hil_fung @AdrianaRezal The headline is pure clickbait. If you look in the article the numbers given are mostly a few points different between the cities with NYC still far behind 2019 on many metrics.

@judedoesthat @exsibilation @Bob_Wachter When the guidance starts out ignoring science, people are misled. I've had friends who could isolate longer but were told including by their doctors that they didn't need to isolate or test after 5 days (in fact told not to). Out in the real world confused message only gets worse

@judedoesthat @exsibilation @Bob_Wachter Nuance would be giving scientifically accurate advice and then offering sensible step downs as higher risk but also reasonable alternatives. But, for example, 5 day isolation is just terrible and credibility destroying when it is quite plausible that day 5 is PEAK infectiousness.

@judedoesthat @exsibilation @Bob_Wachter Not exactly. Guiding people to do what they are doing anyway will be most followed but isn't useful guidance at all. It needs to be a balance between utility and compliance.

@JewStats @_TheAncientOne_ @michaelmina_lab @CDCgov @NIH @US_FDA Yes but it deflects blame. Two people out sick due to virus is less politically problematic than one person out on isolation policies that are blamed on leaders.

@JewStats @_TheAncientOne_ @michaelmina_lab @CDCgov @NIH @US_FDA

@VincentRK Yes and no. Even with the current composition of Congress, deals were made, horses were traded. I argue this was a bad compromise vs. say, making the cap $2500 and starting in 2023 or 2024. Effect on actual individual humans is too easily abstracted into a budget number.

@VincentRK It's possible to recognize that it is better than nothing and it is hard to pass these bills, and also recognize this aspect is still horrible.

@VincentRK 2025?
These are elderly people, not teenagers. Making them wait 3 years (i.e. a substantial portion of their life expectancy and destruction of savings) is horrible.
