By terminal goals I *roughly* mean things like convenience, safety, fun, enjoyment, status, love, health...
Terminal goals aren't "individual" or "collective", they just are. What *is* individual or collective are the strategies for achieving these ends.

I've been thinking about *why* this is true, and I might have an explanation. Basically, I think it comes down to a confusion between terminal goals ("the things we ultimately want") and our strategies for achieving them... https://twitter.com/VitalikBut...

Rhetorical tip: you can often frame either side of a debate as being individualist or collectivist.
Example:
"Instead of worrying so much about our individual safety, we should focus more on our collective need to have a rich and enjoyable shared life that's worth living for"

。。https://twitter.com/VitalikBut...

@robbensinger @MichaelTrazzi Probably correct to have me leaning a little more "bad" than "good"

@robbensinger @MichaelTrazzi I like how two people's impressions of me ended up on opposite sides of the square!
(In reality I think I'm in the middle of the soon vs not-soon distribution; my probability distribution on "when it will happen" is quite wide)

@Noahpinion Think of it as similar to a $X signup bonus, with an added bonus to the project of giving them a widely dispersed ownership distribution. That's the best way to frame the case for it imo.

@zengjiajun_eth How would that work? The smart contract verifies answers to security questions by checking the hash?
(I actually do have ideas for how to do something like that much more safely than how most people conceive of security q's, but I think relying on friends might still be better)

@zengjiajun_eth One other important thing in social recovery is making sure your friends ask security questions before signing off on anything. This doesn't need to be complicated and hard, actually security questions can be a fun game to re-live old memories. https://t.co/7hm7FdBIZs

@adrupsytov @zengjiajun_eth It's possible to set up a social recovery system in such a way that you're friends don't know what they're recovering until/unless you have to actually call on them to recover.

@joshgans @glenweyl I definitely think there are ways of achieving these goals that break things and ways that don't break things. Pairwise-matching feels on the safe side; if you try to lie to look uncorrelated and win big on one matching opportunity, you're missing out on lots of other matches.

@joshgans @glenweyl > don’t we want truthful voting of preferences?
We definitely do, though cooperative game theory tells us that once you move away from (unrealistic) individual-choice assumptions achieving the optimum is often impossible, so we have to be more humble in what the goals are.
