@thereal_truther @JeromeAdamsMD Sweden had significant restrictions longer than Florida I think. But there's a lot of granularity in which restrictions, how long, how enforced, etc. Lockdown vs not lockdown framing seems more inflammatory than useful.

@thereal_truther @JeromeAdamsMD Sweden actually closed stuff, banned travel, banned any gatherings >50 people (i.e. every single concert, convention, many weddings, etc.).
Sweden didn't lock down but places like the US did is ridiculous.
I don't think the word is really useful if there aren't actual locks.

@thereal_truther @JeromeAdamsMD I'm not sold on it being a useful word at all for asking people to stay home. Perhaps one might make the case that it is deliberately divisive from the "anti-lockdowners" too.

@thereal_truther @JeromeAdamsMD I mean as far as I know the origin of the word is things like prisons and schools, where the doors are literally locked. What was done in China pretty clearly approximates that and places like Italy is closer.

@thereal_truther @JeromeAdamsMD "Asked to stay home" = "lockdown"
Seems questionable to me.
Perhaps the word should just be retired. It's clearly problematic. As you say, you have people using it to refer to mask mandates or bars closing an hour early.

@thereal_truther @JeromeAdamsMD There's a gray area here but claiming "we were locked down!" is cry-babish given the experience in, say, Italy, where people were allowed to go out once per week, police were enforcing it, and human interaction was reduced to clanking pots and singing from balconies.

@thereal_truther @JeromeAdamsMD This is really questionable. "Stay-at-home" was both not enforced essentially at all in practice and had a precise legal definition that didn't actually require you to stay at home.

@wherewereweb4 @ymenken @JeromeAdamsMD @Mikeska Where was that. Every place I've seen, "essential business" included hardware stores and exempt from closure, not just Home Depot. Many smaller businesses closed on their own though.

@rjar1980 @JeromeAdamsMD @annbauerwriter Both can absolutely be true. There are ways of "going overboard" that are not "lockdown".
Lockdown = you can not leave (your home, neighborhood, etc.).
Many places did this. The US did not. Even in places in the US with "stay at home" orders on paper, there was no enforcement.

@MelpomeneMel @mikealbeland @yaneerbaryam @BodoBrueckner I wasn't sure from the perspective, but that certainly seemed possible. I'd be trying at least. Also looking for the best place to shelter if clear can't escape.

@69L46 @AshishKJha46 Even under the (crappy) current CDC recommendations, at least 1/3 of the country lives in a place where everyone should be masking indoors. Think about that.

@AshishKJha46 "100k a day" is extreme misinformation due to low reporting of cases and you know it.
300-400 deaths per day (130k/year) is not "low".
Stop spinning, it reflects poorly.

@perdidostschool @Bob_Wachter @AshishKJha46 @ashishkjha Also, how is 300-400 deaths per day (where the decline stalled and plateau maintained for the past several months) "low"?
That's 130k/year, far more than any seasonal flu and still one of the leading causes of death.

@perdidostschool @Bob_Wachter @AshishKJha46 @ashishkjha Hospitalizations in the US have stayed low?
Nope. Tripled since the April low, ICU doubled. Both a steady rise that shows no sign of slowing and may even be accelerating.

@Kelly05484118 @spinnerscircle @manuriv93285316 @BennuSpaceRock @NateSilver538 The age adjustment might be valid for Florida (though it is complicated due to part year residents and a variety of factors including low % nursing home residents in Florida),
BUT:
California is BOTH older than Texas AND has lower per capita deaths, so that doesnt work at all

@Kelly05484118@spinnerscircle@manuriv93285316@BennuSpaceRock@NateSilver538

@MauiBoyMacro @biancoresearch Even when rates are low the curve is still usually upward sloping meaning that longer borrowing hurts the budget. There is borrowing all across the curve but the average (long term) is usually about 5 years, when it moves there is a budgetary impact.

@MauiBoyMacro@biancoresearch
