@ParkeBench @BillHanage In practice, there are some very high follower accounts who block everyone, including highly credible experts, who ever disagrees with them. What you see may appear to be an open debate but is actually a false consensus that gives garbage more weight than it deserves.
@ParkeBench@BillHanage
@BillHanage I don't really see blocking as a matter of shouting in someone's ear (muting is closer).
Blocking lets people shut out criticism or opposing views (though certainly not everyone uses blocking that way), WITHOUT the same visibility as closed threads, so in some ways problematic.
@BillHanage I'm replying to this
"Possible and probable are not the same thing and it is important to remember that, especially when thinking about risk"
My comment is the non possible is one bin. Probable is another bin, but not useful w/o regard to consequence.
@Zoomba20222 @CaitHatesCovid @DFisman True to a point. They change slowly, and the system is mostly sized accordingly. In fact if you magically made those go away, it would create other problems, due to loss of revenue and overcapacity.
@Zoomba20222@CaitateScovid@DFisman
@Zoomba20222 @CaitHatesCovid @DFisman Those are all individual risks, not instances where people (including business activities and facilities) extend risks to others. Regulation of the latter is routine, the former much less so.
@Zoomba20222@caitatescovid@DFisman
@CaitHatesCovid @DFisman Health and safety regulations are pervasive. We don't stop water treatment, restaurant inspections, kitchen workers wearing a hat or hair net/tie (but masks, zOMG that would be TERRIBLE!), road safety, etc. When health and safety risks persist, we continue effort to reduce.
@CaitateScovid@DFisman
@imnotacatx @VoteoutTrudeau @DFisman It implemented both restrictions and life-changing recommendation from March 2020, just a little less than others. If you want actual less restrictions look to New Zealand which had more up front allowing far less over the duration. https://t.co/29BFYzPpP1
https://t.co/29BFYzPpP1
