By making things difficult for miners, they would have to spend more energy (costly) to receive rewards.
The increased costs of #mining a block would cut into profits and de-incentivize miners from running their mining rig, effectively turning off PoW.

When Ethereum was created, it was done so using the Proof-of-Work consensus method.
At the time, there weren’t many other blockchains other than #Bitcoin , and many used PoW because that consensus method was proven successful.
