@fmokren @DataDrivenMD Presymptomatic people have always been infectious for a day or so before symptoms. That's close to the most contagious period, with high measured viral load.
Asymptomatic people who just barely test positive briefly but never reach a high viral load is not the same thing.
@fmokren @DataDrivenMD If the issue is transmitting to others, the most recent, and unchallenged, CDC data and guidance on community masking based on transmission (rather than filling up hospitals) says to wear a mask in your area, although just barely. When it drops below 50, then it wouldn't.
@fmokren @DataDrivenMD It looks "low" visually, perhaps, because it is much lower than the enormous Omicron peak. But look at the levels before Omicron, which weren't exceptionally low either, they're similar to now.
@fmokren @DataDrivenMD Not sure what you're seeing that is disagreeing. 50.5/100k/7 days puts it in the CDC "substantial" category (cutoff is 50), where they have recommended universal indoor public masking based on transmission. https://t.co/J5RRuDXves
https://t.co/J5RRuDXves
@fmokren @DataDrivenMD It's really not subjective. There is literally no new science supporting it, and CDC didn't claim otherwise. They simply made a policy decision to stop caring about anything but managing hospital usage.
@fmokren @DataDrivenMD Unless you really do live somewhere with very little covid (unlikely, but possible), if you or your household members are out in public regularly, you're exposed whether you are aware of it or not.
@fmokren @CDCDirector It is the CDC community transmission map. They no longer reference it in masking recommendations but still maintain it for other purposes.
The link is here, but the page is a bit finicky, sometimes doesn't work, and sometimes only with certain browsers.

@NBarton @whole1day @RealSexyCyborg @DrLeanaWen @denise_dewald Walking down the street is orders of magnitude less exposure. Some societies might still want to ban but the difference in degree means the policy may also be reasonably different.
@NBarton@whole1day@RealSexyCyborg@DrLeanaWen@denise_dewald
@fmokren @DataDrivenMD I don't know where you live, but it's pretty high in most of the US. Not literally everywhere, that is true. If your area has none, congratulations.

@fmokren @DataDrivenMD Your suggestion that you "would know" due to symptoms running is not consistent with the guidelines.
If exposed, the recommendation is to wear a mask around others regardless of symptoms.
@fmokren @DataDrivenMD FOR the past two years, including a month ago. Not two years ago.
We most certainly did NOT learn a lot about transmission in the past month, although the CDC did release a couple of studies supporting masks I think. Might be slightly before.
@fmokren @DataDrivenMD The guideline applies to known exposure, but let's face it, with current high rates of transmission, if you're out in public (or your household members are), you're probably getting exposed whether you know it or not. If not out in public, again, doesn't matter.
@fmokren @DataDrivenMD CDC guidelines for two years were to wear a mask in public to avoid transmitting to others, even if not yet showing symptoms. Nothing about the virus has changed, only politics.
Current guideline is to wear a mask in public if testing positive or exposed even without symptoms.
