@wsbgnl The current daily rate (near low for 2022) is around 120k per year, still much too high. Numerically, most are probably vaccinated or previously recovered or both, because there just aren't that many left who aren't.
@thumbhatguy @NKinNewEng @macroliter You could say the same about drunk driving, but society has learned not to accept that (in the past, unfortunately, it did, resulting in great suffering).
Your risk evaluation and perspective stops being a personal matter when it increases risk for other people.
@VGrubsky @MichaelSFuhrer It depends what you mean by fail. There are small single digit community cases still being found (down from 10ks). The hope in both Shanghai and other cities is that regular mass testing can substitute for long painful lockdowns, but that's not exactly proven so far.
@VGrubsky@MichaelSFuhrer
@mlurker444 @FinchTH Because the rest of the world kept shitting covid on them. New Zealand eradicated covid twice, only to be infected yet again by a "living with the virus" region (NSW in that case).
@EvaChanda @AmyTanMD @IshatReza It's a combination of airline management scumbags taking bailout money so they wouldn't have to lay off workers, and then laying off workers anyway (and politician scumbags allowing this), covid deaths, long covid, and covid sick leave.
@EvaChanda@AmyTanMD@IshatReza
@KAErdmann @stlouisfed Not really clear what was going on there. It did drop below the 2018 low but the magnitude of the drop was mostly in line with previous cyclicality and plausibly could have gone back up ex-pandemic. Probably needs some more drill down into situation to understand.
@KAErdmann@stlouisfed
@zigziggityzoo @RogersWork @NaveedAJamali @BFSEsq Mass shootings might be different (but not clear that slicing and not considering geography isn't cherry picking) but about half of guns used in crimes in Illinois are from out of state (often Indiana, but also a mix of others).
@_scott_oneil @IDoTheThinking He's not losing this year at this point. Of course anything is cosmically possible but either way a few Newsom ads aren't moving the needle. It would have to be some other black swan.
@wsbgnl @wanderer_jasnah @georgimarinov @OJJohnson81 @OmicronData @zeynep @kallmemeg @jbakcoleman @jfeldman_epi @GYamey @statsepi Every comparison to it being "like the flu" ignores that people typically get the flu every 5-10 years (probably less for older more vulnerable people who don't have kids in school). 1-2 bouts of covid every year is 5-20x more burdensome at equivalent severity.
