@jeromeusa @akajinglesloll @JeromeAdamsMD @SouthwestAir @AmericanAir @Delta @united Right, we agree the airlines don't care about the restaurants. We just disagree about the reason. Nordstrom DOES care if the rest of the mall is a ghost town, and will leave too when a mall dies like that.

@jeromeusa @akajinglesloll @JeromeAdamsMD @SouthwestAir @AmericanAir @Delta @united It works both ways. They fill the anchor tenant first because there are fewer of them and they're bigger deals to make. The smaller stores have more churn.
That's another reason the big stores pay so little rent, BTW. Their leases are older, sometimes decades.

@jeromeusa @akajinglesloll @JeromeAdamsMD @SouthwestAir @AmericanAir @Delta @united Right, they're not because it's a captive market.
People wouldn't go to malls as much if Nordstrom and Sears were the ONLY stores there. They would, and do, go to airports just as much even when the restaurants suck.

@jeromeusa @akajinglesloll @JeromeAdamsMD @SouthwestAir @AmericanAir @Delta @united Yes the bigger stores are a bigger draw, so they get a better deal. However, if the rest of the mall is a ghost town or has only shitty stores with no desirable product or no inventory, Nordstrom is probably going to leave too. United Airlines probably can't/won't.

@jeromeusa @akajinglesloll @JeromeAdamsMD @SouthwestAir @AmericanAir @Delta @united Anyway, the point is everyone in a mall or airport cares about foot traffic. The difference is that an airport is a captive market, and malls are usually not even remotely that.

@jeromeusa @akajinglesloll @JeromeAdamsMD @SouthwestAir @AmericanAir @Delta @united According to it's most recent income statement, Nordstrom paid $265 million in fixed rent and $100 million in variable rent (percentage of sales). It may (and probably does) get a better deal than smaller stores, but it doesn't pay $1 or even close to it.

@jeromeusa @akajinglesloll @JeromeAdamsMD @SouthwestAir @AmericanAir @Delta @united They kind of do because part of what you are paying for at a mall is foot traffic.
Issue with airports is the foot traffic being a captive audience.
Monopolies require effective regulation.

@Marco_Piani @apsmunro @nytimes Yes that's what I meant. "Extreme" in view of covid risk but "moderate". You may be right about moderate vs. other.

@Marco_Piani@apsmunro@nytimes

@Marco_Piani @apsmunro @nytimes Such "extreme moderates" seems like an unusual group to me. I guess without (at least not from the screen shot) knowing the number in that group it may be plausible.
