For the best experience for ALL our users, we added an option to switch to Google notifications. It's OFF by default, and must be manually enabled if you want to use it instead of our decentralized service.

Some elaboration on our 1.19 update, in particular Android push notifications.
We want to stress that this is OPT-IN, and the default (bc defaults matter for privacy!) is our notification service.

Our Android notification service is the best for privacy & decentralization.
It prevents Google/Firebase from knowing anything about your notifications, & it's impossible for a Google account to be connected a Status notification whatsoever.

So why would anyone want Firebase notifications if they're worse for privacy or decentralization? For some users, these notifications use less battery and can avoid issues with some Android OS interfering w/ the background service.
